Murdered Odisha cameraman's employer is on the off; ex-bureaucrat convicted

 

Two weeks after the body of cameraman Manas Swain's remains were discovered in the state of Odisha's Nayagarh district, police arrested retired bureaucrat, Niranjan Sethi, for allegedly having been involved in the kidnapping as well as the murder of the photographer. Niranjan Sethi is former director of the Information and Public Relation Department, Government of Odisha.

His arrest comes the arrest of three people as well as two contract killers who were believed to be employed by his employer, Sarmistha Rout, were caught and arrested by Odisha Police. As of now, Sarmistha Rout, who is the proprietor of the web portal and is also a principal suspect in the case, is still in jail according to police.

Manas Swain disappeared on the 6th of February. Manas Swain's body was found at Ranpur region of Nayagarh district two weeks ago.

In an interview with India Today, Bhadrak Police SP Charan Singh Meena told, "On February 6 late the night, Manas Kumar Swain of Godipokhari village which falls under Ranapur Police station in Nayagarh district was abducted by a gang of Nalgunda of Chandbali area of Bhadrak district. He was on his way back from Palaspur village within Chandbali police limits following the shooting of a wedding ceremony."

"As as per eyewitnesses' account of those present at the time of the incident there were five persons who were present, which included two women among them Sarmistha. After putting swain inside the car then, they drove the car toward Bhubaneswar," police said.

Manas The family of the deceased filed a missing persons complaint with Chandbali police on 14 February.

In the course of an investigation, it was found that, after kidnapping Swain the group that was said to have been employed by Sarmistha was able to take Swain to Bhubaneswar and put him in an old age residence known as Dayal Ashram, which is run by Sarmistha.

Swain was said to have been beat, tortured and then killed in the old home for the elderly on February 7, under the direction of Sarmistha.

The three suspects-- Bhagyadhar Nayak Vivek Nayak as well as Krushna Chandra Nayak-- then took Swain's body to Ranapur and placed it in a grave in the hope to destroy evidence.

"During interrogation the suspects confessed that they had committed the crime under the direction by Sarmistha," the police official claimed.

ASP Jatin Panda told Jatin Panda, "Manas swain was in possession of some offensive videos that could put the woman in danger. She was trying to locate the CPU chip that contained the photos and videos."

Police sources said Sarmistha may have tried to persuade Manas to surrender the videos kept in a microchip that was with the microchip, but he quit the position and returned to his home. The sources added that Sarmistha created an organization with two contract killers who would track and kill Manas to retrieve the microchips.

However, the contents of the videos and photos remain to be determined.

Niranjan Sethi, who was arrested on Monday, apparently assisted Sarmistha to obtain government approval for her website during his time as I , and also Director of PR (Information and Public Relations) Director (Technical).
