Protesters burn vehicles after a Karnataka activist is killed; Shivamogga is tense

Protests in Karnataka's Shivamogga district after the murder of Harsha, a 23-year-old Bajrang Dal activist, became violent on Monday. Protesters began throwing stones, brandishing guns, and torching automobiles. To keep the situation from spiralling out of control, authorities were forced to use tear gas to disperse the gathering.

1. At 9.30 p.m. on Sunday, February 20, Harsha, a Bajrang Dal activist in Karnataka's Shivamogga, was stabbed to death. Section 144 was implemented in the region due to ongoing violence.

2. Following the murder, there were a few episodes of burning and stone-pelting in Shivamogga. Bikes were set on fire, and stones were thrown at homes and businesses.

3. CM Basavaraj Bommai urged calm. "An inquiry is underway, and those responsible will be apprehended as soon as possible," he stated. Police officers have been directed to preserve law and order, and I ask that everyone remain calm."

4. During a meeting with the victim's family, Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra stated that the incident was unrelated to the recent hijab controversy. "However, we must wait for additional investigations before reaching a decision," he stated.

5. Karnataka minister Eshwarappa said Muslim thugs were engaged in the murder and accused Congress' DK Shivakumar of 'provoking the Muslim goons.'

6. DK Shivakumar, the head of the Karnataka Congress, dismissed Eshwarappa's charges. A lawsuit must be filed against him, and he must be fired. "He has brought humiliation to the country and the national flag," claimed Shivakumar.

7. Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah sought the resignation of Home Minister Araga Jnanendra and published a tweet seeking the death penalty for the killers of the Bajrang Dal activist.

8. BJP leader BL Santosh published a contentious tweet in which he claimed Harsha was slain while participating in an anti-hijab demonstration. Meanwhile, Harsha's body was transported to the crematory under the close supervision of the Rapid Action Force.

9. JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy claimed that the Congress and BJP intended such an occurrence to occur in the state. He accused the parties of attempting to destabilise Karnataka's calm.

10. According to Home Minister Araga Jnanendra, Karnataka police detained three Shivamogga residents. At least 212 inspectors and sub-inspectors from throughout the state have raced to Shimoga to assist local police.
