Top Officials Need to Determine Why Classified Information is Disclosed to the Media

There are times when classified information is leaked by people working in the National Defense Department. This can be a huge deal if such information ends up in the wrong hands. In one case, the United States Military Papers were found to have been leaked. This was a breach on the classified information of the United States Military. The National Security Agency was involved in the leak.

There was a state department employee that found some state department documents in a filing cabinet and took them home. She mistakenly thought they were work files. She took them home and forgot about them for six months. When she discovered the mistake, she reported it to her superior and the doj. She faces punishment for leaking state department documents.

Leaks of classified information happen more often at the national level. For example, top secret U.S. documents were recently released by three former government employees. They had top secret information on the Bush administration's plan to torture suspects. This would be bad enough, but what if the information ends up in the wrong hands?

One might think that the newspapers would get the leak, or even the press. However, all three publications got the same top secret U.S. documents. So where did they get the top confidential documents? At the office of the inspector general for the U.S. Department of State. The inspector general is responsible for maintaining the public's confidence in the State Department's performance of its functions and programs.

Why are top officials at the State Department handing out top secret information to reporters? Simple really, they need the stories! Why do leakers of classified information feel confident in leaking them? It's because the dog wants to keep the bad guys busy so it offers these juicy bits to the media. It's also because they hope one day the general public will look at their reports with embarrassment and call in their congressmen to look into what is going on.

There was another occasion during the George W. Bush administration when top secret documents were deliberately made public. This was done as a way to distract the media from focusing on more substantive issues concerning Iraq. As you may recall, the media was quite skeptical of the Bush administration's claims that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. The hope was that the general public would forget that the media was covering this story and move on to other things.

Well, the classified information was released anyway! That means the leakers didn't have much luck. It also means that the general public doesn't have much confidence in what is said by their elected representatives. It is widely believed that these leaks are being orchestrated by elements within the intelligence community. The leaders want to create a controversy, and they may be hoping that the mainstream media will act like news agencies do. If this is the case, it is amazing that we still have newspapers and television stations.

In any event, classified information doesn't need to be leaked. There are many serious issues concerning the leadership of our country. These issues should be left for the people to deal with. And while there may be classified information that needs to be released, the public should not be allowed to know what they are.

The American people need to understand why we have leaders. Leaders do not leak classified information. If they did, they could be arrested and tried for war crimes. Our government at any time can decide to release or make classified materials available to the American public.

If we are going to have a free press, then we need to be able to discern if the source of classified information is legitimate. If the sources are not credible, then the press has every right to publish the information. If the sources are not credible, then the American people have every right to ignore the news entirely. Apparently, there is an official policy in the United States government about this matter.

This is unfortunate. The Department of Defense, which is one of the most powerful branches of the government, needs to determine which parts of our society are giving information to our enemies. Why are these people doing this? Why are they revealing secrets that help our enemy win the hearts and minds of the American people? I hope you will consider this in 2021.
